CYCLE 8
ABRAHAM HURTADO

FAKEless
Murcia, Spain.-1972
Space 1

Abraham Hurtado has collaborated with numerous artists and companies at national and international level. In his own work he explores the notions of presence and space, the multiplicity of contexts and possible arrangements of the public and how they affect the perception/reception of projects. In recent years he has been involved in various projects in which he has constantly asked himself questions like: What should be the nature of representation? How can the body overcome the boundaries of thought? To what extent can we represent mental states though bodily performance? How do the presence of the body, memory states and loss of memory take place? Dead bodies: the space between death and life. Thinking about stillness as motion, hallucination, internal movements, virtual and real worlds, fiction. The internal structure of performance, how to produce a character from the materialization of an idea, a feeling that functions as a guide. There is a hidden structure that pulls everything together, a fluctuation of body language, speech, movement, interpretation and psychological tension. All in search of a new language.

FAKEless is produced in its entirety by La Conservera and Centro Párraga. It centres on the conception of a space in which we can watch emotion being constructed, the possible ways of perceiving a face and the transformation of that face through an act of presence.

It is a reflection on the memory of faces and on the possible futures generated in every experience, a sensory piece which locates the action in an indeterminate time and space. The face is seen as containing or documenting our very existence. Although the viewer’s first impression is of digital manipulation, FAKEless makes no use of any kind of artifice or performative tool. It attempts to bring us close to the most intimate emotion generated by the slow, subtle movement the performers themselves produce during the action, avoiding any kind of technological process such as slow motion or still images.

The installation consists of a total of fourteen black and white portraits projected from the ceiling to the floor. The ages of the performers selected by the artist, all male, range from seven to eighty. Two of them are a composition of portraits of the artist himself. All the performers are dressed the same and are filmed with the same background, lending the installation chromatic and visual unity. On entering Space 1 at La Conservera viewers are invited to walk through a kind of labyrinth in which these projections are hidden behind small concrete walls.

This work is the culmination of a research project which Hurtado began in 2008. Since then it has been one of the creative foundations of the pieces he has produced up till now. FAKEless concludes a cycle of exploration of different perceptions of presence and its mental and spatial states.
